Jim and Eddie on Environmental Services

Today we are introducing Jim Naylor and Eddie Torres, who both work in the Environmental Services Department at Cedar Crest. The purpose of Environmental Services is to ensure a safe and clean facility. Jim has worked for Cedar Crest since 1991 and currently serves as Environmental Services Director while Eddie has worked for Cedar Crest since 1993 and currently works in the maintenance department.

Environmental Services Daily Work

A typical day on the job for Eddie includes painting, repairs, and miscellaneous maintenance work. Eddie provides the hands-on work necessary to keep Cedar Crest safe and inviting for residents. For Jim, each day comes with overseeing the maintenance department, the housekeeping department, and the laundry department. Usually this includes tasks such as scheduling services and ordering supplies. He also has to stay in the loop on the latest safety guidelines made by the state and federal government. Though their day-to-day work can differ, ultimately Jim and Eddie strive to keep the facility up-to-date and hospitable for every person that enters the facility.

Changes and Challenges in Environmental Services

Eddie Torres

Of the various maintenance work, Eddie enjoys painting the most and tries to be creative when he can. “I try to always learn more and I like to create something new too, when I have the chance,” he shared. Jim tries to stay flexible since rules and regulations in the health industry are constantly changing. Adaptability is an important trait to have in his line of work. The past two years have been filled with a great deal of change namely due to the pandemic. Together, they share a mindset of service to Cedar Crest. They tend not to limit themselves in their department and aim to help around the facility wherever they can. “If there’s something to be done, we are right there to help,” Jim said.

Working for Cedar Crest

Both Jim and Eddie have more than 25 years of individual experience at the Cedars. For both of them, the considerate leadership at the Cedars contributes to their job longevity. Cedar Crest is a family-owned business, including family members Susan Whipple (Cedar Crest Administrator), Thomas Whipple (Cedar Home Health Administrator), Rick Catallozzi (Assistant Administrator), Bob Catallozzi (Administration), and Katie Whipple (Registered Dietician). “They’re very respectful, very understanding,” Jim shared. “They treat everyone with a great amount of respect. That is one of my favorite parts of the job.” Similarly, Eddie shared that teamwork is another highlight of the job. Connecting with fellow team members and forming relationships makes the work even more engaging and meaningful.
