April Healey on Administrative Nursing in Rhode Island

April on Administrative Nursing

Today we are introducing April Healey. A Rhode Island native, April has worked for Cedar Home Health for almost four years. She began as a field nurse where she would travel around to patient homes each day. Within a year she started working as an administrative nurse and now, she assists the clinical director at Cedar Home Health.

Home Health in Rhode Island

April originally began her nursing career in obstetrics after graduating from Central Texas College. After some time in that field, she started looking for something new. “There’s so many things you can do with nursing that you just want to try different things,” she shared. “Home health was something different. I was not sure if I would like it, but I love it.” April found that home health has much more flexibility in her work schedule, which she appreciates as a mother of four boys.

Administrative Nursing in Rhode Island

In assisting the clinical director, April helps to guide a team of home health nurses in order to provide patients with quality home healthcare. Her work exists primarily in the office. Some work she is responsible for includes claim scrubbing, scheduling of field nurses, and handling rehospitalization. Her favorite part of her work is handling patient intake and referrals. It can be challenging, but that’s why she likes it. “It’s very fast-paced and it’s always keeping me on my toes,” she shared. The home health office sets the priorities and goals that field nurses should see in their patients. This is outlined through care plans. For instance, if a patient is diabetic, their care plan would include ensuring that the patient's blood sugar level and diet are on the right track. “Our goal is to stabilize the patient, get them back in the community, rehab them, and get them on their feet,” April said.

Administrative Nursing with the Cedars

Working at Cedar Home Health is special to April because of the organization’s compassionate nature. April previously worked in corporate hospitals, where she felt more like she was just a number. At Cedar Home Health, she feels greater consideration by the leadership and team at large. “They know your name, they know you.” she said. “You’re not just an employee.”

For more than 40 years The Cedars has provided skilled nursing, long term care & short term care, rehabilitation, and home care services all throughout Rhode Island.
